Man shot dead at Cortland Vesta apartments on Birmingham’s Southside

A man was killed early Sunday in a shooting at an upscale Southside apartment complex in Birmingham.

Birmingham’s South Precinct officers were alerted just before 5:30 a.m. that shots had been fired at Cortland Vesta, a Highland Avenue high rise.

When they arrived at the building, they found an adult male unresponsive on the ground near the parking garage. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

His identity has not yet been released., but he is believed to have lived at Cortland Vesta. Multiple families stood just outside the crime scene tape, obviously grieving and distraught.

Fitzgerald said investigators believe a confrontation took place inside the parking garage between the victim and the unknown suspect. The victim is believed to have been a resident at Cortland Vesta.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the victim and suspect knew each other.

“We will speak to residents who may have heard or saw anything,’’ Fitzgerald said.

This is the first homicide to happen at Cortland Vesta, which opened in 2020.

“This is just an example how violence does not discriminate which area it comes to,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Unfortunately, we have had a violent weekend and we’ve seen violence take place in areas that are not common. It’s an eye-opener.”

Just hours earlier, an exchange of gunfire outside Tin Roof in the city’s Lakeview District left four people wounded, two of them critically.

On Friday night, one person was killed and three others injured when shots were fired at an adult birthday party in the Baby Kingston community.

This morning victim is Birmingham’s 49th homicide in the city this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and two others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 60 homicides, including the 49 in Birmingham.
